Cordoba
Cordoba is a jazz fusion / future soul sextet from Chicago. They were born at UChicago where the three founding members (Cam Cunningham, Brianna Tong, and Zach Upton-Davis) studied under Chicago composer and improviser, Mwata Bowden. They have released 3 EPs and expect to release their first LP in 2020. In addition to the three founding members, their current lineup also includes Khalyle Hagood, Eric Novak, and Zach Bain-Selbo.
From the beginning, the band has been interested in combining jazz improvisation with the contemporary sounds of hip-hop, soul, and rock. Their music uses captivating grooves, a distinct harmonic language, soaring melodies, and liberated extemporizations to both challenge systems of inequality, state violence, and hopelessness and imagine a new world. On their upcoming LP, Specter, they expand their sound to include full string and horn sections and the dueling lead vocals of Brianna Tong and Eric Novak. Specter is a record that reflects dread in a time of global upheaval and hope for a future that’s ours to create.
